Artist Statement
Hajar is a contemporary artist whose work is fun, bright, and expressive. Her creative practice centers on mixing different styles and references to celebrate family, nature, and the quiet, peaceful traditions of Oman.
Tell us about yourself and your artistic background.
In my art practice, I love gathering a mix of references and styles and mashing them together into something entirely new. I used to just put brush on canvas, usually skipping the sketching phase altogether. But when my professor urged me to map out the whole process beforehand, it completely changed my workflow, it brought a whole new level of organization to my technique.

How would you describe your artistic practice?
I would describe my artistic practice as fun, bright, and expressive. While my work is rooted in meaningful themes, I ultimately want people to just look at my art and enjoy it for what it is.
What themes or ideas are most important in your work?
At the heart of my work are the themes of family, tradition, and nature. While Oman is often underrepresented in global art and media, I view this scarcity not as a deficit, but as a virtue. It has allowed my country to preserve its most defining trait: a profound, quiet serenity. Through my creative practice, I want my art to act as a vessel for that exact atmosphere, sharing the quiet beauty of our landscape and traditions

What inspires your creative process?
Collaboration and community heavily inspire my creative process. Being surrounded by other artists and witnessing my colleagues create their work provides a deep sense of motivation. I thrive on learning from others.
Can you tell us about a recent artwork or project?
I’m currently experimenting with sculptures, mainly wood and steel, to create luxurious décor pieces using Omani jewelry as inspiration.
What challenges have influenced your development as an artist?
The biggest challenge in my development has been overcoming imposter syndrome and finding the confidence to share my art with the world. It can be incredibly intimidating to put something so personal out there, and it’s a hurdle I have to face every day. However, I make a conscious effort to push through that self-doubt, using my passion for painting and the support of my artistic community to keep moving forward
What role does art play in your life today?
Art is my outlet, my career, and my entire life. Because creating comes naturally to me, it has shaped how I experience the world; I observe everyday life with a bit more care and appreciation. I find myself constantly notice things others might miss, like the depth of a specific color, the texture of a weathered surface, or the unique shapes of the faces around me
What are you currently working on?
My current series of paintings focuses on the old doors of the old Souq in Ibra, Oman, right where my grandmother lives. I am fascinated by their contrast, some are bright and colorful, while others are caked with grime and covered in cobwebs with interesting silhouettes.
What are your future goals as an artist?
Moving forward, my main goal is to dedicate more time to my practice and focus on becoming a more intentional artist. I want every brushstroke, reference, and theme I choose to have a clear purpose.
