Drawing is the foundation to my art. I am not sure where the drawing ends and painting begins because drawing underpins everything that I do. I have always thought the world around me is full of variety and that should be reflected in my art and it’s crucial that’s the way I see my work, constantly changing and full of variety because nature is constantly changing. I try to give the paintings more layers and unity. My paintings are relatively uniformly articulated in their level of detail and the whole field is thoroughly developed and painted in its every part, including every margin and corner, whether with brush or rag, thickly or thinly. I tend to rely on observation made in my sketchbook that later I could freely compose into lively, highly original surfaces. I sometimes stand back and observe what I painted and surely agree with my sense that I couldn’t set out to get such an effect. It was something that happened while I was painting almost as if the paint did it on its own as I moved it about. This is why I feel real painting is a mysterious and continuous struggle with chance.
