The line: Traces of Existence

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
THE LINE: TRACES OF EXISTENCE
Choi Keyoung Mook Solo Exhibition
THE LINE: TRACES OF EXISTENCE is a solo exhibition by Korean artist Choi Keyoung Mook, exploring the line as a visual trace of time, breath, movement, memory, and existence.
For Choi, the line is more than a formal element of painting. It is a living trace created through the movement of the body and the rhythm of breathing. Each gesture records a fleeting moment that can never be repeated, transforming the act of drawing into a way of making time visible.
Throughout his practice, Choi explores the aesthetic and spiritual possibilities of the line, bringing together repetition and variation, control and spontaneity, silence and movement. As lines accumulate, individual moments become rhythm, and countless traces form a visual space where time, memory, and existence converge.
In this exhibition, the language of the line is expanded through diverse painterly forms and compositions. The canvas becomes a space where breathing, movement, pauses, and gestures are accumulated. Viewers are invited not simply to look at the works, but to experience the movement, time, and traces of existence embedded within them.
The title THE LINE: TRACES OF EXISTENCE expresses the central idea of Choi’s artistic practice: every line is a trace left by a moment, and the accumulation of these traces becomes a record of existence.
The line becomes time,
the trace becomes memory,
and the gesture becomes a record of life

Artist Statement

The Line as a Breath of Time
I draw lines to make time visible.
For me, a line is more than a formal element of painting. It is a trace of breath, movement, memory, and existence. Each line begins with a moment of breathing and records a time in which the body and mind are present. Once drawn, it can never be repeated in exactly the same way; it carries the evidence of a moment that has already passed.
My practice is rooted in a continuous exploration of the aesthetic and spiritual nature of the line. Through simple gestures, I explore rhythm, tension, silence, emotion, memory, and movement. Rather than seeking absolute control, I allow intuition and the natural rhythm of the body to participate in the process. The line becomes both intentional and spontaneous, reflecting the unpredictable rhythm of life.
As lines accumulate, individual moments become rhythm, and countless traces form layers of time where memory and existence converge.
I believe the language of the line can transcend culture and geography. Before becoming an image, a line is a gesture—an instinctive human act of leaving a trace and affirming that we were here.
I do not seek a perfect line.
I seek an honest line—one that breathes, moves, remembers, and carries time.
For me, the line is the breath of existence made visible.
