The scared ground of makli
Artist Name
Muskaan Irshad

Artist Statement
Carved stoneware pieces shaped by the funerary architecture of Makli. Pierced surfaces different and color and with stony texture, echoing weathered tombs and glazed tilework exploring the vase as threshold between solid form with lights and shadows.
Exhibition Statement
These handmade clay vases play with solid shapes and open spaces. The clay is shaped and pierced with cut out patterns drawn from Islamic geometric design and Moorish window screens. Light shines through the carved holes, showing hints of underneath. The angular shapes meet delicate, geometric patterns and floral designs. The rough clay surface feels earthy and handmade, while the open, carved parts let light and shadow move through the piece.
